History: In the winter of 2010 the leadership of the Southern Chapter of ISA requested the Southern Chapter TCC committee to form an Ad Hoc committee for the purposes of holding a North American Tree Climbing Championship. This committee was formed with membership from the Southern Chapter TCC as well as representatives from ISA Chapters in Canada and the United States. This competition was to be held in conjunction with the North American Tree Care Conference jointly hosted by the Southern Chapter of ISA and the Utility Arborist Association. The first NATCC event was born and the competition was held in Savannah Georgia February of 2011. At the 2011 ISA Annual Conference in Parramatta, Australia, the ISA ITCC committee voted to approve both the NATCC as well as the Asia Pacific Tree Climbing Championship as subcommittees of the ISA ITCC. These ITCC Subcommittees were given the final approval by the ISA Board of Directors in the fall of 2011

During the 2011 inaugural NATCC event in Savannah Georgia, the Southern Chapter of the ISA requested to again host the NATCC for 2012. The event was to be held in conjunction with the Southern Chapter’s annual meeting in Birmingham Alabama, scheduled for March 16th – March 20th 2012. In the fall of 2011 the Southern Chapter changed their position on hosting the 2012 NATCC.

The Florida Chapter TCC Committee was contacted and asked they would consider hosting the 2012 NATCC. After the Florida Chapter TCC had time to review the opportunity they declined for 2012 but stated they are interested for possibly 2013 and beyond.

The Charlotte Arborist Association was then approached with the proposal to host the 2012 NATCC event. After the Charlotte Arborist Association Board and TCC committee had time to meet, they also declined to host the 2012 NATCC event.

The New England Chapter of the ISA was approached to host the 2012 NATCC event but they also were not prepared to host the event for 2012.

The Illinois Chapter of the ISA was approached to host the 2012 NATCC event, and the City of Urbana Illinois Parks Department had welcomed the opportunity to hold the NATCC event. The Illinois Chapter also declined to host the NATCC event for 2012.

The Texas Chapter of the ISA at the end of 2011, volunteered to host the NATCC event for May of 2012. At the end of January 2012 the Texas Chapter Board had not had time to meet and make a decision to officially host the event. While the Texas Chapter was in their decision process, the leadership of the New Jersey Chapter of the ISA had offered to host the NATCC event if the Texas Chapter declined. Unfortunately by this time the NATCC Committee had run out time to properly plan and execute a 2012 NATCC event to the same standards expected of such an event.

It is important to note that while the different chapters and organizations were deciding whether or not to host the 2012 NATCC, The leadership of the Society of Commercial Arboriculture had committed to help the NATCC find a home as well as offer support from their organization and membership. The NATCC Committee wants to say thank you, to the SCA and the New Jersey Chapter of the ISA for their efforts, as well as all the ISA Chapters and Associations that took the time to consider hosting the 2012 North American Tree climbing Championship.
